Capri Funicular and Monte Solaro Chairlift: Tickets, Prices and Hours
The Capri funicular climbs from Marina Grande to the Piazzetta for a few euros; the Monte Solaro chairlift is €15 return. Hours, tickets, tours.
Two lifts do most of the climbing on Capri. The funicular carries you from the port up to Capri town, and the chairlift carries you from Anacapri to the top of the island. Neither is bookable in advance and neither is expensive, so this guide is mostly about how they work, when they run, and what Capri day trips do and do not include.
Where does the Capri funicular take you?
The funicular runs from Marina Grande, the port where the ferries land, up to Piazza Umberto I, the square everyone calls the Piazzetta, in the middle of Capri town. The ride takes a few minutes and spares you the climb, which on foot is about half an hour up stepped lanes. It is run by the island’s funicular company, SIPPIC.
How much does the funicular in Capri cost?
A single ride costs a few euros, and you buy the ticket at the windows, not on board. The fare is posted at the ticket office. We could not confirm the current figure on an operator page in October 2026, so we do not print one here; take small change and check the window at Marina Grande.
In summer the queue at Marina Grande is the real cost, since everyone arriving on the morning ferries wants the same few cars. If it is long, the island buses and taxis also make the climb from the port.
The chairlift: Anacapri to the top of Monte Solaro
The chairlift leaves from Anacapri, the island’s second town, and climbs to the summit of Monte Solaro, Capri’s highest point. The chairs are single seats, open to the air, with your feet hanging over the gardens and vineyards below.
Prices (the operator’s own site, checked October 2026):
| Ticket | Price |
|---|---|
| Up and down | €15.00 |
| One way, up or down | €12.00 |
Opening hours, from the same site:
| Months | Hours |
|---|---|
| February, March, November, December | 9:30 to 16:00, last ride down 16:30 |
| April to October | 9:15 to 17:00 |
The operator lists no hours for January. Like any open chairlift it can stop in strong wind, so on a gusty day check at the lower station before you plan around it.
Is the Capri chairlift worth it?
On a clear day, yes. From the top you look down on the Faraglioni rocks, across the Bay of Naples to Vesuvius, and along the Sorrento peninsula towards the Amalfi Coast. The ride up takes around a quarter of an hour, and €15 return is less than most things on the island. On a hazy or cloudy day the view is the whole point, so it is fair to skip it.
If you would rather walk one way, the path down from Monte Solaro to Anacapri is the classic option, which is why the one-way ticket exists.
Do Capri tours include the funicular or the chairlift?
The chairlift, usually not. Capri day trips that stop in Anacapri tend to list it as an optional extra you pay for on the spot. Cioffi Tours’ Capri, Anacapri and Blue Grotto full-day trip from Naples, for example, lists chairlift tickets as optional and not included, and another Anacapri tour gives the extra as 15 euros per person, which matches the operator’s price.
What a tour does give you is the time in Anacapri to ride it, and the transport up from the port, so you are not queuing for the funicular with everyone off the morning ferries. Most guided day trips move their groups by minibus on the island.
If the chairlift is the part of the day you care about, pick a tour with free time in Anacapri and budget €15. The Capri tours from Naples and Capri tours from Sorrento pages list the departures, and our things to do in Capri page covers the rest of the island.
